NZ Prison reforms. A brighter future?

Legislation to Improve Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Prisoners, Including Remand, Begins Today

In a move to transform prisoner rehabilitation, a new bill will be presented today. The changes in the Corrections Act will allow limited interaction between remand and convicted prisoners for educational, religious, Māori, and therapeutic programs.

This aims to provide better access to crucial services for remand prisoners while upholding their presumption of innocence.

The legislation will also enhance literacy and numeracy programs and focus on rehabilitation for Māori prisoners.

Additionally, the bill addresses the need to monitor technology usage in prisons, ensuring safety and privacy while preventing harm.
