On October 4, 2024, Tewarehi Tekau Henry, 44, was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison at the Timaru District Court for a brazen crime spree that terrorized elderly residents across the Timaru District.
Henry’s offending, which spanned from July to November 2021, saw him face 17 charges, including aggravated robbery and unlawful entry. The crimes targeted some of the district’s most vulnerable residents, including three victims in their 80s.
One of the most harrowing incidents involved an elderly man who was tied up in his home for 38 hours before managing to free himself. Another victim, whose impact statement was read to the court, described the terror of waking up to find Henry in his bedroom, demanding car keys while wearing a face mask.
“I had never feared for my life before, but at that moment, I was terrified,” the man, who lived with his 80-year-old wife, said. “I did as I was told, fearing what might happen if I didn’t.”
The man’s car contained $4000 from the recent sale of another vehicle, which he intended to deposit at the bank. Also stolen were irreplaceable documents, including a family birth certificate and other items of significant sentimental value.
One victim required intensive care following the ordeal, while others, including the man who gave his impact statement, have experienced lasting emotional trauma.
The crimes occurred in residential homes and popular public spaces like the Patiti Point beach area, leaving the Timaru community shaken.
Justice Delivered at Timaru District Court
Crown prosecutor Andrew McRae described Henry’s actions as “brazen” and “callous,” emphasizing the devastating impact on the victims and their families. Henry’s sentencing on October 4 brings some closure to those affected, but the emotional scars remain.
