Two Southland brothers, Joseph and Michael Turner, have been sentenced for a series of violent offences against their family, bringing an end to a case that unfolded over several months.
Joseph Turner, 28, received three years and two months in prison, while his younger brother Michael Turner, 25, was sentenced to two years and six months. The pair appeared in the Invercargill District Court last Friday after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including assault with intent to injure, threatening to kill, and wilful damage.
The offending began in January and continued until June, with incidents escalating over time. According to the prosecution, the violence primarily targeted the brothers’ father and younger sister. In one incident, Joseph Turner punched his father repeatedly during an argument about money. Michael Turner then joined the assault, smashing furniture and threatening to kill his father if he contacted police. On another occasion, their sister was shoved against a wall after she tried to intervene during a dispute.
Victim impact statements presented in court described the ongoing fear and distress experienced by the family. Their father reported that he had been sleeping in his car on several nights to avoid confrontation, while the sister said she often stayed with friends to feel safe.
Judge Emma Smith described the offending as “prolonged and deliberate,” noting that the brothers’ behaviour had created a climate of fear within the home. She highlighted the psychological toll on the victims, adding that the family’s decision to report the violence reflected their desperation.
Defence lawyer Mark Wilson said both brothers had shown remorse and were participating in counselling and anger management sessions. He argued for a reduced sentence, citing their willingness to seek help and the strained family circumstances leading up to the offending.
While acknowledging their efforts, Judge Smith said the severity of the offences and the impact on the victims required a custodial sentence. Protection orders were also issued to prevent further contact with their father and sister upon release.
Joseph and Michael Turner were taken into custody immediately after sentencing.
