An Auckland man has been jailed for issuing nearly 80 fraudulent warrants of fitness (WoFs) without inspecting the vehicles.

Dwayne Lord was sentenced on Monday, to six months in prison in the Auckland District Court after being found guilty of multiple transport law breaches.

Between December 2022 and June 2023, Lord fraudulently accessed the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) vehicle inspection system using his employer’s login details, despite not being an authorised vehicle inspector.

On four separate occasions, he issued 78 WoFs, with most of the vehicles never receiving a proper inspection.

The scam was uncovered following an NZTA investigation, which found that very few of the vehicles had been checked by Lord or by any qualified inspector.

NZTA said the deliberate abuse of the system posed serious risks to road safety and undermined public trust in the warrant of fitness process.
